In 2024, we experienced a year of transformative encounters at Cidadão Pró-Mundo. We expanded the number of students, opened new classrooms in different cities, and strengthened our presence in communities dreaming of more opportunities. It was also a year when we saw former students return as volunteers, forming a cycle of impact, continuity, and affection.

About CPM

English as a Passport to a Future of Opportunities

For over 25 years, Cidadão Pró-Mundo (CPM) has been connecting young people from public schools to a world of possibilities through free, high-quality English teaching. We believe in the power of education to transform realities and build a fairer and more equitable Brazil. Mastery of English is presented not only as an academic skill but as an essential tool for social integration and the expansion of professional and personal opportunities, opening doors to better jobs, advanced studies, and cultural exchange.

In a community in the Capão Redondo neighborhood of São Paulo, the desire to converse with an American visitor ignited a spark. Motivated by the ambition to connect people and worlds, a group of friends from a local social project took the initiative to teach English door-to-door. This spontaneous movement was the origin of Cidadão Pró-Mundo.

Growth

What began as an informal initiative has been formalized as the Association for Global Citizenship. The growth was rapid, with the opening of new educational units in São Paulo and the creation of a rotating volunteer model. In this system, classes are taught in pairs, often pairing an experienced volunteer with a newcomer, making the experience more appealing and scalable, attracting more people to the cause.

A milestone in the organization's history was the partnership established with Cambridge University Press & Assessment. This agreement ensured the provision of excellent educational materials, free for all students, raising the standard of education. At the same time, the professionalization of management, with the first hires and the development of strategic plans, accelerated the impact and expansion of CPM to other cities, such as Campinas and Rio de Janeiro.

The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted 100% of in-person classes, representing a significant challenge. To remain open, the CPM community, with a task force of volunteers and staff, reinvented its operation by migrating the course to an online environment in just a few months. This change not only ensured the continuity of teaching but also created the Virtual Unit. Currently, this unit serves 30% of the students, allowing CPM to reach young people across Brazil and recruit volunteers from around the world, turning the crisis into a catalyst for national expansion.

Indicators

More than numbers, lives transformed

In 2024, the work of Cidadão Pró-Mundo continued to yield concrete and measurable results. Each figure represents a dream closer to realization, a barrier broken, and a life impacted by the power of education and collaboration.

The high pass rates in the Cambridge proficiency exams and the regular course attest to the quality of the education provided. The significant number of former students who return as volunteers highlights a virtuous cycle of impact and demonstrates that, with the strength of partnerships and the ongoing hard work and resilience of the teams since the pandemic, the results were achieved.

Our formula: innovative methodology and a network of passionate volunteers

Learning that goes beyond the classroom

The CPM uses the "Flipped Classroom" methodology to optimize classroom time and deepen knowledge. This model creates a continuous learning cycle and gives more autonomy to students. The process is divided into three stages:

  1. Before class (Pre-class): Students explore the content online through videos and interactive activities, many of them provided by the partner platform EnglishCentral. This way, they arrive at class already familiar with the vocabulary and grammatical concepts of the topic.

  2. During class: With the theoretical foundation already established, classroom time is dedicated to practice, conversation, and clarification of doubts with the direct support of volunteacher instructors. This makes the class more dynamic and focused on language application.

  3. After class (Homework): Exercises reinforce what was learned, consolidating the knowledge and preparing the ground for the next learning cycle.

"Even if you find it difficult or doubt your ability, CPM shows that it is possible to learn and grow with support, acceptance, and dedication. What I like most is feeling that I am indeed learning at my own pace, with respect for my rhythm."

"With extensive experience at Cidadão Pró-Mundo since 2019, I have held various roles, from volunteer to director, learning about pedagogical support and administrative management. Currently, as Coordinator of Students, I redesigned the preparatory course for the Cambridge exam, which resulted in an increase in the pass rate from less than 30% to more than 90%. My journey at the NGO demonstrates how collaborative actions can create a significant impact on people's lives."

STRATEGIC PLANNING

Dreaming and building the future

Our journey is just beginning. We aim to expand our social impact and help accelerate the growth of English proficiency among the Brazilian population. To achieve this goal, we developed the new Strategic Plan of Cidadão Pró-Mundo in 2024. By the end of this decade, we want to expand in student numbers, Teaching Units, areas of operation, and partnerships.

The goals for 2030 include:

logo
  1. Reach 4,500 students enrolled.

  2. Engage 2,800 active volunteers.

  3. Expand the physical presence with new educational units in São Paulo (North and East zones) and in Rio de Janeiro, areas with high demand and potential for impact.

  4. Deepen the quality of education with new projects, such as offering conversation classes and specialized mentoring programs for advanced level students.
