In recent years, corporate volunteering has ceased to be treated merely as a social responsibility action and has come to occupy a central place in people development. In a market where technical skills are constantly updating, purpose and socio-emotional skills make more and more of a difference. When professionals from different fields decide to teach English voluntarily, the classroom stops being a one-way street. Those who teach tend to develop skills just as relevant as those who learn. Below is what this experience brings to the careers of the volunteers, to the partner companies, and to the work of Cidadão Pró-Mundo (CPM) in expanding access to the language.

Skills that go beyond grammar

There is an idea that mastering English is enough to teach it. In practice, facilitating learning requires abilities that are not always exercised in the office routine.

1. Communication and active listening. When dealing with students of different paces, backgrounds, and stories, the volunteer needs to adapt their language and abandon jargon. This develops clarity, patience, and empathy, useful for any professional who aligns expectations and works with diverse teams.

2. Leadership and facilitation. Leading a group requires presence and the creation of an environment where making mistakes is part of the process. Without formal hierarchy, the volunteer learns to engage people through purpose and trust, something close to the concept of servant leadership.

3. Adaptability. An unexpected question, equipment that fails, or a topic that requires another approach demands a quick response. The experience exercises flexibility and critical thinking in real-time, valuable in unstable work scenarios.

4. Emotional intelligence and self-awareness. In the role of facilitator, the professional recognizes the limits of their own knowledge and develops resilience. Contact with the students' journeys also broadens their world view and maturity to handle difficult situations.

Why companies invest in volunteering

For organizations, supporting volunteering goes beyond meeting ESG goals. It is an investment in internal culture, talent retention, and the work environment.

Belonging. Employees who find in their company a channel to contribute to society report more satisfaction and connection with the organization.

Integration between areas. In volunteer programs, people from different positions and sectors work side-by-side with the same goal. This reduces barriers between departments and strengthens internal cooperation.

Soft skills development. While traditional training is usually theoretical, volunteering works as practice. Preparing classes and interacting with students develops behavioral skills that show up in the day-to-day.

The role of Cidadão Pró-Mundo

In Brazil, access to English language teaching is still restricted, which limits work and study opportunities for many people. For nearly three decades, CPM has been working to change this scenario, promoting inclusion and equal opportunities through education.

This work happens with the support of volunteers and corporate partnerships. The methodology, materials, and guidance offered sustain the exchange between volunteer and student over time.

The results appear in the students' journeys, who expand their perspectives, get jobs, and gain autonomy. Three students went to Manchester to live the experience of an exchange program, and Caio won a scholarship in Dubai. On the other side, the volunteers redefine their own careers by putting what they know at the service of the collective.

How to participate

Volunteering to teach English is not just about grammar and pronunciation. It is about opening doors, creating dialogue, and realizing that professional development gains strength when it goes hand in hand with social transformation.

If you are looking for learning and purpose, or if you represent a company that wants to strengthen its social actions and leadership training, CPM is a space to transform that intention into impact.
